The vegan diet can bring enormous benefits to your health, the environment and animals. It is expected then that by eliminating animal products from your diet, and adopting a vegan diet of only vegetables or fruits, you should be getting all those benefits.
The truth is that every diet, no matter if it is vegan, vegetarian or non-vegan, if not planned properly can be disastrous to your health. If you want to adopt a new diet, you should start learning more about nutrition, what nutrients your body needs and how much of it. By learning more about nutrition, you become more aware of your nutritional needs and how to satisfy those needs, instead of cheating yourself with common beliefs.
The other day, I was reading a blog post about a person who was just starting a vegan diet and made one of the most common mistakes, she was just relying on a bowl of cereal for her recommended intake of nutrients. She believed that because the box of cereal said it could give her 100% of all the vitamins she needed, she would be fine. Again this is not an uncommon story. I’ve heard so many times before that a person would go vegan and would just eat salads and fruits. Then when their bodies cannot take it anymore they are forced to go into old habits of eating animal products and blame the vegan diet for being unhealthy.
Now what can we do to stop this?
It is very simple. Just like there is a food pyramid for non-vegans, you need to learn the food pyramid for vegans. This food pyramid will show you in a general view, all the types of foods and vitamins you need to succeed as a vegan. In there you will find that your diet should consist of grains such as whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa and cereal as your foundation for your diet. Then you need to put more variety of foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, soy milk and legumes in order to get all the fiber, nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants this types of foods are very well known for.
By keeping a varied diet, you are getting all the benefits a vegan diet can offer you and start living a healthier life. Ignore this and your experience as a vegan might not be very enjoyable. Don’t forget that it is very easy to be an unhealthy vegan if you are not well informed.
